Ballet Ariel’s original ballet set to Aaron Copland’s iconic Appalachian Spring is the perfect end to a season of perfection. Paired with the debut of another Ballet Ariel original, Ballerinas by Degas, this season finale epitomizes the grace and elegance of classical, narrative ballet.
Artistic Director, Ilena Norton, brings a fresh perspective to Copland’s enchanting and pastoral music with a fully developed narrative story that audiences find delightful. Performed on pointe, Norton’s ballet includes choreography from Gregory Gonzales, whose contemporary style integrates wonderfully with Norton’s beautiful interpretation. With special permission from the Copland Foundation, this American classic is being discovered by a new generation, enriched through Norton’s distinctive choreographic style.
Ballet Ariel’s creative team has produced another original treasure for Denver Metro audiences especially for the season finale. Ballerinas by Degas tells the story of a young dancer, Simone, her rapid rise within the Paris Opera ballet company and the Impressionist artist, Degas, who records it all. Dappled with jealousies and rivalries, under the watchful eyes of their mothers, the young dancers vie for position at the barre, in the company and for the attention of wealthy gentlemen. Performed to the music of Georges Bizet, Gabriel Faure sand Adolphe Adam, three acclaimed composers of the day, Simone’s hard work and commitment quickly propel her from neophyte to etoile (lead dancer).
Both beautiful ballets will be performed for two shows only at the Lakewood Cultural Center on April 28 at 7:30 pm and April 29 at 2:00 pm.
