Douglas County Libraries is pleased to present planetary scientist Dr. Alan Stern, the leader of NASA’s New Horizons mission to Pluto, at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 22, at its Highlands Ranch location (9292 S. Ridgeline Blvd.). Stern will talk about his new book “Chasing New Horizons: Inside the Epic First Mission to Pluto,” which recounts the incredible first-ever space journey to Pluto that was completed in 2015.
Stern’s story is inspiring, starting with his childhood aspirations of becoming a space scientist to being able to include some of Pluto founder and astronomer Clyde Tombaugh’s ashes aboard the New Horizons spacecraft. He was also named one of “TIME” magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2016 and 2007. His book offers a compelling, behind-the-scenes account of how the mission was accomplished, including the science, politics, technical challenges, and much more. Hear about it from the author and scientist himself.
Admission to Stern’s talk is free, but registration is required at DCL.org or by calling 303-791-7323. The event is ideal for teens and adults, armchair space explorers, and anyone who is interested in the science of space. Book sales and signing follow the presentation.
